Opportunity Hubs are a key initiative under OCHRE, the NSW Government’s Plan for Aboriginal Affairs promoting opportunity, choice, healing, responsibility and empowerment. The initiative aims to support Aboriginal primary and secondary school students in Years 5 – 12 in Government and non-Government schools.
MTC Australia’s Opportunity Hub is situated in Campbelltown in Sydney’s West, and is working to engage with 66 schools to develop strategies and support existing ones that assist Aboriginal students to remain in school or successfully transition into employment or further education.
To guide the Opportunity Hub, MTC Australia works with Aboriginal leaders and organisations and other key stakeholders through an Opportunity Hub Advisory group. The Advisory Group guides the strategic and operational planning and assists to build partnerships between schools, employers, education and training providers and the local community. The members of the group include representatives from Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation, Tharawal Local Aboriginal Lands Council, Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG), Muru Mittigar, SWSi TAFE Aboriginal Unit, Benevolent Society, Breakthru, Department of Education and Communities, Ability Options VTEC and MTC Australia.
