Certificate III in Coding Aboriginal Languages for Indigenous Literacy

Developed, directly in response to requests by Elders, by Mary-Ruth Mendel, Speech and Language Pathologist, the Certificate III in Coding Aboriginal Languages for Indigenous Literacy (CALIL) directly addresses two key needs:

  • Community need and requests for training in the development of quality language and literacy resources in First Language with governance and empowerment by and with the community
  • Eradication of distorted pronunciation of First Language words with a practical and workable solution.  

The course equips participants with bespoke training in the following:

  • Encoding and decoding spoken words into the speech sounds within the pronounced whole word is a taught and learned skill. Most First Language Speaker Groups do have oral language skills but, the conversion of spoken language to print language and literacy resources is a learned process which is not robustly known. This is set out in the CALIL course
  • Applying the CALIL Code, via the Code Template, to provide a flexible format for multiple speech sound patterns to be assigned to spoken whole words; The Code is the explicit interface between the oral language and literacy/print resources
  • Identifying explicit phonological processing and identification of word and phonic patterns of speech through a code mark to represent the spoken patterns of words viewed in print format
  • Developing an organised system to assign a code number for identifying the authentic spoken pronunciation of the written word and, therefore, to anticipate the spelling of the oral word. 

CALIL fulfils the need of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to protect their First Languages (FL) from incorrect pronunciations and generated into authentic language and literacy teaching resources. CALIL transitions First Language resources into the modern context and allows speakers to simultaneously participate in both Indigenous life-ways and the mainstream economy – two ways.

Who is it For?

Historically, vast amounts of work have been undertaken by First Language speakers but there has been no pathway for this work to be recognised, remunerated or laced within a training network offering opportunities for real training, qualification, or employment.

The nationally accredited Certificate III in CALIL offers opportunities for community members to:

  • embark on a training pathway that leads to other courses and workplace opportunities
  • receive accredited recognition through a training framework for, potentially paid, work.

The course is for two main groups:

  • Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander participants with oral language skills in their own First Language/s
  • Other participants with oral language skills in the target First Language.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification but participants must have access to First Language Speakers in the target language with cultural authority to verify their Language work.

How it Works

Certificate III in Coding Aboriginal Languages for Indigenous Literacy (CALIL) is delivered by the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation as a third party provider to MTC Australia.

It comprises 4 core units which are completed as one cluster of learning across the whole course through combinations of workshops, which can be provided in intensive blocks and/or flexible community-driven schedules.
