Next up in the Meet Our People series is MTC’s Marketing Manager, Vanessa Thorp!
Where did you work prior to MTC?
I worked at a company called Staples, now known as Winc, for almost six years in various roles including as a Marketing Manager and the Corporate Responsibility Manager.
What made you want to come and work at MTC?
Before working at Staples/Winc I had worked for a few charities and I was really keen to get back into the not-for-profit sector. I really liked the idea of working for a grassroots organisation that had connections in diverse communities across Sydney and being part of changing people’s lives.
What are you responsible for in your role at MTC?
Reporting into the GM of Marketing and Growth, I manage the marketing team and as a team, we look after all external facing communication channels, like our website, social media, emails etc. We also manage internal communications and mikie. I also work across a number of cross functional/divisional projects to provide marketing support and perspective. Every day is different in our team, so there is always lots of varied work to keep us busy.
Tell us a bit about your life outside of work
Well I live in the Inner West with my partner and our cat Lola. I have a creative background, so I love music, art and theatre, and living where I do, there is a lot to choose from to go and do (when we aren’t in lockdown of course!). I am also a fan of all things vintage and rockabilly, so I have an addiction to vintage clothes and jewellery, and I was also getting back into swing dancing before COVID-19 hit.
What are you doing to pass the time in quarantine?
Like a lot of people, I have been decluttering my house and redecorating… and doing WAY too much online shopping. I also wanted to start adding more to my small art collection by buying more pieces from local artists and friends, so have been slowly building on that collection and having fun placing it around my house.
Are there any TV shows or books that you’ve seen during quarantine that you’d recommend?
At the start of quarantine, I wasn’t actually watching many new series, I was keeping myself busy with things around the house as re-watching old movies and shows. The new ones I did see I would highly recommend – Dracula (Netflix), The Great (Stan), Picard (Amazon Prime) and Douglas, the new stand up from Hannah Gadsby on Netflix.
