Damiana came to Australia from Italy in 2019, following a period travelling around Europe and the USA. Hopping off the plane alone in Sydney was, as she describes, “the hardest moment of my life”. She describes Sydney as a huge surprise, and she quickly hit the ground running, before long being referred to MTC’s SEE program to improve her English skills and employability.
Damiana recalls feeling embarrassed on her first day: “my cheeks were red like a pepper, but after introducing myself to the class, everyone was so polite, and the introduction of the teacher really sparked me. She came here at my own age and alone like me, adapting to humble jobs and learning language. Today, she is an English teacher, wife and amazing mother. She is always a woman full of advice and solutions and so it was this school that improved my life in Sydney.”
Before long, Damiana secured an interview at Coles. The week before the interview, her trainer, Sarka varied from her usual lesson plan and helped her prepare, conducting a mock interview and providing advice on body language and dress code. They also went over some common interview questions and answers.
The next week, Damiana found out her application was successful! “I want say publicly thanks to those who turned my insecurities into victories. I never knew anyone who really thought I was worth something, until I met you and then you made me believe it too.” Congratulations, Damiana!
