Studying is hard enough already without adding your noisy neighbours, siblings playing the PlayStation at full volume, and your social media accounts continuously dinging with the latest goss into the mix. It’s really important as a student to block out the rest of the world and get focused when studying to get the most out of your time and ace that upcoming test!
If you’re a little lost, can’t concentrate, or need some self-control to focus, here are some of the best tips for effective and distraction free study.
Turn your Phone on Silent
Mobile phones are easily the biggest form of distraction as you can’t control when you’re going to get a message or notification and even if you can’t see it, you can still hear it.
Instead of allowing your attention to be taken away every ten minutes, one of the best study techniques is to switch your phone on silent and put it on the other side of the room (out of sight out of mind). When your study session has ended, you can reward yourself with some social media downtime.
Turn off your Internet Access
It can be so tempting to quite literally have the world at the touch of a button in front of you. One minute you’re searching google for a paper on your history exam topic, and the next thing you know you’re on Youtube watching the world’s cutest animals in history.
Everyone falls victim to the power of Google, and the only way to remove temptation is to follow the study tip of pre-downloading and saving all the resources you need and then switching your internet access completely off. This will lead to a more productive and time effective study session as you are lessening the time spent searching for the information you need.
If you don’t have the self control (let’s be honest most of us don’t) to keep your mouse from hovering over the WIFI icon, try an app such as Freedom which assists in blocking online usage!
Find Privacy And a Peaceful Environment
Another great study method for students to keep distraction at a minimum is to create a study space that gives you privacy and is peaceful. Everyone studies differently and what makes one-person work more productive might not work for the next person.
You need to find what makes you comfortable whether that’s lighting a relaxing candle, sipping a hot coffee, playing your favourite relaxing music, or making sure there is total silence. If you are comfortable within your environment, your brain will feel more at ease and you’ll be more focused and less likely to fall into the traps of distraction.
Always remember, you’re allowed to take breaks! Your brain will need to relax and regain the energy to keep on studying. Time Out is a great way to make sure you’re not overdoing it, and there’s nothing better than a reminder that you’re due for a well deserved rest… and yes you can check Facebook in this time.
