NEIS For Participants

If you have a business idea or side hustle and want to take the first step towards starting or scaling your business, the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) is the perfect program for you! Our expert trainers will teach you about finances, marketing and operations, setting you up for success on your small business journey.

What NEIS involves

Firstly, our team will review your business idea to check whether it’s feasible. If so, you’ll commence the training phase of the NEIS program.

Training: Over our part-time, eight-week program, you’ll take your first steps towards creating a successful business through fine-tuning your business idea, developing a business plan, forecasting a budget and completing a Certificate III in Micro Business Operations (BSB30315), a nationally accredited qualification that will help you build essential skills for running a small business.

Our flexible training program also gives you the option to attend online classes, allowing you to fit your training around other commitments.

Coaching: Once your business plan is approved, you’ll be allocated a Business Coach who’ll be your main point of contact and support you on your journey through the NEIS program. They’ll provide one-on-one mentoring and individualised advice to help you create a sustainable business.

Financial assistance: If you are currently receiving an income support payment through Services Australia or Department of Veteran Affairs, you may be eligible to receive the NEIS Allowance. You can receive NEIS Allowance payments for up to the first 39 weeks of your business operation.

The payment is equal to the JobSeeker rate for singles, 22 years of age and over, with no children. To receive the payment, you must remain compliant with the obligations under your NEIS Participant Agreement.

You may also be eligible for NEIS Rental Assistance for up to 26 weeks if you have previously been receiving Services Australia or Department of Veteran Affairs rental assistance.

Does your business qualify?

When you apply to enrol in NEIS, the Australian Government also requires that your business idea meets certain eligibility criteria. These include (and are not limited to):

  • Not currently be operating on a commercial basis
  • Having an independent business structure
  • Being lawful and withstanding public scrutiny of your operation
  • Being assessed as commercially viable by MTC Australia
  • Intending to be established, located and operated within Australia
  • Being structured so you, the applicant, maintain a controlling interest in the business while it is receiving payments under NEIS.

Frequently asked questions

What courses can I study as part of NEIS?

Services Australia recognises up to 13 weeks of training as an approved income support activity. We’ll refer you to the training courses you need to get your business idea moving.

We recommend the Certificate III in Micro Business Operations to many of our NEIS candidates, who have found the course to provide them with essential knowledge for future success.

What is the NEIS Allowance and how is it calculated?

Entrepreneurs currently receiving an income support payment through the Department of Human Services are eligible to receive NEIS Allowance. You can receive NEIS Allowance payments for up to the first 39 weeks of your business operation.

The payment is equal to the JobSeeker rate for singles, 22 years of age and over, with no children. To receive the payment, you must remain compliant with the obligations under your NEIS Participant Agreement.

What factors may affect my NEIS Allowance?

Services Australia and Centrelink will take into account any income you may be receiving apart from your business income. If you earn more than double your NEIS Allowance rate, Centrelink may reduce or cancel your NEIS Allowance payment.

At all times, your NEIS business MUST be your primary source of income, and your business income isn’t measured against your payment under any circumstances.
