We’re excited to share that we recently kicked off our first Foundation Skills for Your Future project in partnership with the International Buddhist Association of Australia (IBAA)!
The project is being delivered to a group of volunteers from non-English speaking backgrounds who are employed across a range of industries, and will help the participants build their confidence and develop the communication, presentation and digital skills required to advance their careers.
Yanjing Liao from our Government Education team is a former IBAA volunteer, and she initially identified this opportunity:
“I used to volunteer at the IBAA Kogarah Temple and know the volunteer work involved in organising events quite well. When the FSFYF program was rolled out, I thought about the temple straight away, and together with the lead volunteer Chia Lee, we identified the need for volunteers in improving computer skills, particularly in preparing PowerPoint presentations for various community events as well, as at their work places. I am so glad the course is up and running and benefiting all the participants to the great extent. They are very grateful for, and at same time excited about, the great learning opportunity. It is amazing to see them so involved in the class and busy learning new skills at a mature age.”
Michael Hunt, one of our Trainers, gives further insight into how the program is going so far:
“All the students are very appreciative of myself and MTC coming in to help them improve their computer and English communication skills. They have been divided into three groups to collaborate on PowerPoint presentations, and each group chose their own topic. They are learning how to design PowerPoint slides by importing images from the internet and resizing them, researching information about their chosen topic and rewording it into short simple text which is appropriate to their audience, and reformatting it according to style guidelines so that their presentation is balanced and aesthetically pleasing.”
Funded by the Australian Government, Foundation Skills for Your Future is designed to assist employers with developing the Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills of their workforce through the delivery of free Employer Workplace Training, increasing employee productivity and efficiency, whilst reducing risk and turnover.
