When MTC Australia’s trainer first met Jasmine David, they observed that she was suffering substantial anxiety about the idea of creating a new career path. Jasmine felt extremely overwhelmed about finding a new job and the process of trying to break into a different industry. As a mature-aged job seeker with limited English, Jasmine felt she faced insurmountable barriers.
To help her overcome these hurdles, Jasmine was included in the Job Skills outreach program being run at Ability Options Campbelltown. This innovative outreach program involves trainers conducting lessons on Ability Options site to increase the comfort and confidence of participants.
MTC’s Job Skills program helped Jasmine develop her confidence and discover new ways to communicate her skills and job-relevant qualities. She found the lessons on formal writing for resumes and cover letters particularly useful as she knew what she wanted to say but didn’t always know the appropriate words to use or the correct way to use those words in sentences.
Jasmine was encouraged to take on a leadership position in the group and often helped other learners. This empowered her to be proud of her knowledge and skills. While completing the program, Jasmine accepted a role in Aged Care as Residential Support Worker. After announcing her success with the job application, Jasmine shared with her trainer that, “Before I started the class, I didn’t think I was ready to start another job. But now I think it’s good to just try something new and give it a go.”
