Originally from Cambodia, Mealea Lee has been living in Australia for almost 20 years. Before arriving in Australia, Mealea worked as a nurse in Cambodia, however, she was unable to gain employment in the same field in Australia. Her limited ability to speak English and her poor digital literacy created significant barriers to finding employment in her industry of choice. Instead, she secured basic jobs to get-by and put her dreams of working in the care sector on hold.
To improve her English and digital literacy, Mealea enrolled in MTC Australia’s Skills for Education and Employment program. From the start of her course, Mealea showed great self-motivation, willingness and initiative and was intensively engaged in all activities in class.
During Mealea’s SEE course, she and other students saw a presentation by a former jobseeker who had gone on to complete a Certificate III in Aged Care and found employment in the field. After seeing this presentation, Mealea decided to join the first MTC Australia SEE Pathway to Aged Care course. Through this course, Mealea has been equipped with skills and knowledge suitable for the Aged Care sector.
Through the combination of this specialised Pathway course, assistance completing her police clearance and Working With Children check and MTC’s connection to industry and community, Mealea received a job offer to work as an Individual Support worker for Alpha Omega Cabramatta. Mealea was happy to accept the role and has now decided to take her next step in this industry by enrolling in a Certificate III in Individual Care and studying whilst continuing to work.
