Self-Employment Assistance is a government-funded course that empowers aspiring entrepreneurs and helps eligible business owners to realise their dream of starting their very own small business through business training, expert mentoring, and income support.
Self-Employment Assistance at MTC is an approved Activity that equates to 20 PBAS (Points Based Activation System) per week. A Progress Payment is available for customers who successfully complete an accredited unit of small business training.
MTC Australia will provide evidence of course completion in the form of an approved Record of Results statement.
This training is funded by the Commonwealth Government.
Who is eligible for Self-Employment Assistance?
To participate in Self-Employment Assistance, your customer must live in the Sydney Metropolitan and be:
Aged 18 years or older by the time you commence the program
Able to legally work in Australia
Available to participate in Self-Employment Assistance training and work full-time on their proposed business plan
Self-Employment Assistance is also available to students, volunteers, and part-time workers who do not work over 25 hours per week.
Eligible participants must not have:
Received assistance from the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme or Self-Employment Assistance within the past 12 months
Filed for bankruptcy and still be classified as bankrupt

Help your customer start their small business
Self-Employment Assistance (formerly NEIS) is designed to give your customer the support they need to create and run a successful small business. This program offers customers the opportunity to undertake and engage in the following:

New business training
After a Business Coach has reviewed your customer’s business idea to see if it’s feasible, they will advise them on which training is best suited to their needs. This may include:
- BSB30220 Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business (13 weeks)
- BSBSS00103 New Business Ventures Skill Set (8 weeks)
- BSBSS00102 Micro Business Skill Set (6 weeks)
Once your customer completes any of these training options, they will have a business plan to move to the next phase of their self-employment journey.
Online classes
Our flexible training program gives your customer the option to attend their business classes either in person or online at a time that suits them, allowing them to fit their training around other commitments.


Ongoing business support
Your customer will receive one-on-one Small Business Coaching throughout the first year of establishing their new business. Note – Small Business Coaching is subject to the approval of your customer’s business plan.

Your customer may also be eligible for additional services to support their new business once they complete their Small Business Coaching. These flexible, tailored options include:
- Business health checks: This option is suitable for customers who want to understand the financial health of their business and how they can ensure its long-term profitability.
- Business advice sessions: This option is suitable for customers who require tailored business advice and is open to Eligible Business Owners and former Participants after completing their Small Business Coaching.
Exploring Self-Employment Workshops
If your customer isn’t quite ready to start their own business but might be interested in doing so, we currently offer online, five-day workshops that will introduce your customer to self-employment.
These workshops are designed to help participants better understand what self-employment means, obtain the practical information they need to run their own business, and give them the chance to network and discuss their ideas with other people.
You may be elligible for a Progress Payment if your customer completes this workshop.


Locations and online availability
MTC Australia offers Self-Employment Assistance throughout the Sydney Metropolitan area. We also offer flexible, online, and face-to-face delivery of the program to ensure that our customers within the Sydney Metropolitan area can undertake the program remotely if need be.
When customers complete their application, we’ll advise of their suitability, and assign a course start date and a dedicated Business Coach who will assess the commercial viability of their business venture.
